Global Net Actors is an initiative dedicated to exploring and mapping the people, organizations, technologies, infrastructure, and specialized roles that make up the global Internet ecosystem.
The Internet we see and experience — through websites, applications, and online services — is only the visible layer of a vast and complex ecosystem of infrastructure, networks, technologies, organizations, and specialized roles operating behind the scenes
Our mission is to look beyond this visible layer and reveal the much larger system behind it — the actors that build the infrastructure, operate networks, provide connectivity and computing resources, deliver content, manage names and addresses, maintain security and trust, monitor and operate critical systems, and develop the standards, policies, and governance frameworks that shape the Internet.
Global Net Actors organizes this complex ecosystem into interconnected domains and roles, providing a structured way to understand who does what, where they operate, what technologies they use, and how they interact with other actors.
Our aim is not to represent the Internet as a single organization or a centrally controlled system. Instead, we seek to provide a clear map of the diverse and often interdependent actors that collectively make the global Internet possible.
By bringing these roles and relationships into one structured view, Global Net Actors aims to make the Internet ecosystem easier to explore, understand, and study — for students, researchers, technology professionals, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding what lies behind the Internet we use every day.
Global Net Actors is the result of a professional, independent, and collaborative study of the global Internet ecosystem. The project has been developed through systematic research, analysis, and classification of the technologies, organizations, infrastructure, and specialized roles that contribute to the operation and evolution of the Internet.
As the Internet is a constantly evolving ecosystem, this work is intended to grow and improve over time. We therefore welcome constructive feedback, corrections, additional information, and professional perspectives from researchers, practitioners, organizations, and others with relevant knowledge or experience. Our goal is to continuously improve the accuracy, completeness, and usefulness of this resource and to build a more comprehensive picture of the global Internet ecosystem together.
