About Internet Echosystem

The Internet is a vast and interconnected ecosystem made up of far more than websites, applications, and connected devices. It is built upon layers of physical infrastructure, communication networks, digital platforms, technologies, organizations, and operational systems that work together across the globe.

At its foundation are physical infrastructures such as fiber-optic networks, submarine cables, wireless systems, data centers, and other facilities that provide the connectivity and capacity on which the Internet depends.

Above these foundations, transport and IP networks move data across local, regional, national, and global networks,

while routing and interconnection mechanisms enable independent networks to communicate with one another.

The Internet also depends on systems that identify and locate resources. Naming and addressing infrastructure — including domain names, DNS, IP addresses, and Internet numbering systems — provides the essential mechanisms through which users, networks, and services can be identified and reached.

On top of this connectivity, cloud computing, hosting, content delivery, edge computing, and other digital platforms provide the resources and services that users access every day.

Security, trust, monitoring, observability, and operational systems help protect, manage, and maintain these interconnected environments.

Finally, the Internet is shaped and coordinated by a wide range of standards organizations, technical communities, regulatory bodies, governance institutions, and policy mechanisms.

These actors establish standards, coordinate shared resources, develop policies, and help maintain the stability, interoperability, security, and continued evolution of the global Internet.

Together, these interconnected domains form the Internet Ecosystem — a complex global system in which thousands of actors perform specialized roles while depending on one another to keep the Internet connected, accessible, reliable, secure, and continuously evolving.
